I was checking out The Journal of Mythical Arts site (recommended by Gautami) today, which is a site dedicated to literary, visual, and performance arts inspired by myth, folklore, fairy tales, and the oral storytelling tradition. Doesn’t it sound fascinating? I think you should check it out too!
So while I was there I read Briar Rose by Kim Antieau, a short story about a girl who wakes up in the hospital and has no recollection of she is and how she got there. When the nurse on duty shows her the tattoo on her butt, she remembers getting it and remembers her name, which is Rose. Rose then finds the tattooist and gets another tattoo and with another memory until, she remembers everything about herself and is covered head to toe in tattoos, her memories, most of them bad but some good too.
I LOVED this sad and depressing story which is compelling and I just could not stop once I started it. Rose is a compelling character and this story is beautiful! I think most of all I loved the moral of this story and I loved this little line too, there is so much power in that sentence.
She remembered touching the snake skin when she was a child, being amazed that it could just start fresh, shed its old life.
I hope you make time to read it. It is wonderful.
This is #31 short story I have read till date 🙂
