I was fortunate enough to attend an expert talk about Thyroid and all the effects it could cause. We had such an awesome time listening to Dr. Shehla Shaikh, leading Endocrinologist discuss all the Myths and Facts about Thyroid disorder and Thyroweight. This session not only threw light on the causes and effects but also discussed many facts which are totally new to me!

 

Sometimes being Parents, we put symptoms like lethargy, fatigue, tiredness, unexplained hairfall, depression weight gain as part of our lifestyle and our job of being parents. Come on, chasing a toddler is no small feat, right? But sometimes, it is good to take into account that these same symptoms could be signs of underlying issues like Thyroid Dysfunction! Dr. Shehla Shaikh talked about how Thyroweight was one of the prime symptom of Thyroid Disorder among others! She also stressed that getting oneself checked was one of the most relevant and important step towards helping oneself. She also talked at large about what we could do to not get this in the first place and also how we can help our young kids from keeping the disorder at bay!

Thyroid disorder is one of the most common endocrine disorders in the world.

Thyroid is a small gland in your neck which secretes hormones that are very important for our body! This gland in the neck secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism.

In effect, each of us have a thyroid gland, and the hormones help us have a normal metabolism. The most common thyroid problems involve abnormal production of thyroid hormones. The most common types of Thyroid Disorder are –

  1. Hypothyroidism – caused due to insufficient thyroid hormone production.

 

  1. Hyperthyroidism – caused due to excess thyroid hormone production.

Thyroweight is the weight gain, lethargy, fatigue and tiredness that is the result of having Thyroid malfunction. One who experiences thyroweight as a symptom, must consult a doctor immediately to get it checked.

During the meet, we got to meet real women who gained weight due to this issue, and one such fabulous woman shared that she had gained around 10 kg in a year, which was gradual but definitely there.

Actually Thyroid dysfunction can happen to anyone from 18 years of age and above! But Experts say unfortunately Women have a higher chance of getting this disorder than men! Out of the many issues that come with Thyroid disorder, here are some of the prominent issues faced by Women all over with this dysfunction –

  1. Weight Gain – Sudden Gain of weight with lethargy, mood swings and fatigue needs to be checked immediately
  2. Irregular Periods – Unfortunately woman who have Thyroid dysfunction, don’t have regular menstrual cycles. This leads to problems while conception. Woman trying to conceive have to take special care and support from experienced doctor for the same

ThyroweightI consider myself fortunate to have attended this event, because it helped me have a very clear idea about this disorder.  As Dr.Shehla Shaikh talked and answered so many questions that us audience had, making sure we got our facts right and busted tons of myths that we had. Some of the many points discussed by Dr. Shaikh were –

  1. Shaikh said that Hypothyroidism is a common undiagnosed disorder. Non – diagnosed and untreated Hypothyroidism may lead to Serious Cardiovascular, and neurological complication! Therefore, it is imperative to diagnose and manage one’s thyroid malfunction.
  2. There is no shortcut, a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise are the only ways to keep this disorder away!
  3. Stress at any age can be a great stimulator for thyroid disorder. Stress is found to be one of the major accelerators and we should try to keep stress at bay.
  4. if you are diagnosed, its imperative to be regular with your medicines and doctor consultations
  5. The Woman having Thyroid dysfunction can also have healthy pregnancy with few precautions and medication and timely care and consultations with doctors.
  6. Once the Thyroid normalizes, we need not consult doctors – This is something we should never With regular medicines and check – ups if we reach a stage where we have normalized the hormone level – its still imperative to get checked as per Doctor’s guidelines.
  7. Iodine is important in our diet but excessive iodine is not good for our overall health. It could disrupt the functioning of the thyroid gland
  8. Vitamin D is another important factor. Low levels of Vitamin D is associated with a higher risk of Thyroid Disorder!

Dr. Sheikh also reiterated that if one is diagnosed with Thyroid dysfunction, it isn’t anything to be worried about. All one needs is a consultation with a specialist, medications, and regular follow – ups and taking care of oneself.

Also, at the event we got to listen to Juhi Chawla, who has been talking about Thyroid disorder and is associated with this cause for a while. Juhi talked about her Husband , Father in law and Hairdresser who’ve been living a healthy life with thyroid Disorder- all they do is take a small pill regularly to keep the disorder at bay. She talked about how correct medication helped her hairdresser get back to her job and life, and that it was very reassuring to hear her say that.

Many People have regulated their Thyroid Levels with the right medication, and a change in their lifestyle. It is totally possible to have a normal, healthy and happy life even after Thyroid Malfunction. During the event we had a chance to listen to some real heroes who have overcome the disorder, but are now able to lead a happy life. One of the speakers on the panel reiterated, everyone has Thyroid, but only a few malfunctions causes a thyroid disorder and even if you do have it – positivity takes you a long way! Following your doctor’s advice and leading a healthy lifestyle – are the key to having a long and beautiful life.
